West Melbourne Teen Shoots Himself During Police Standoff

WEST MELBOURNE, Florida – A 16-year-old boy, identified as Michael Proctor of West Melbourne, shot himself during a police standoff.

On Wednesday at approximately 11:55 p.m., officers of the West Melbourne Police Department responded to a disturbance at 5140 Martin Lane, West Melbourne, FL.

The caller advised her 16-year-old grandson was throwing things around inside the residence.

Officers arrived and entered the home where they began interviewing family members.

As this was happening, Proctor came from a back bedroom and began firing at officers.

Officers retreated towards the front door with three other occupants of the home as the suspect continued firing on officers.

Officers were not able to return fire. No officers or occupants of the home were injured.

The West Melbourne Police Department Strategic Response Team held a perimeter on the residence. Martin Lane and Walker Avenue were closed for much of the night. Some homes in West Melbourne were evacuated.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was also on scene.

Proctor’s grandmother said she had given Michael $20 to put on his school lunch account yesterday, but he told her later that he had used the money to buy the LSD from another boy.

The teen’s father, Gregory Proctor, said Michael was a good kid did good in school. He said his son was on drugs and that made him violent.
