MELBOURNE, Florida – A 62-year-old man was arrested Monday after making a bomb threat to a clerk at the Dollar General store located at 3995 N. Courtenany Parkway, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
Mike Torres, of Merritt Island, was charged with Displaying a Hoax Bomb, Petit Theft, Robbery With a Weapon, and a Threat to Discharge a Destructive Device.
Multiple people called 911 and followed the suspect until deputies detained him a couple blocks away from the Dollar General.
The clerks told deputies that Torres entered the store and came to the register. While there, he pushed what appeared to a cigarette pack along with a note, according to the report.
“Torres demanded the cashier to give him the money and stated that the cigarette pack was a bomb,” the deputy said in the arrest affidavit.
There were four customers in the store and two employees at the counter. Several of the victims were in fear during the incident, the report said.
As Torres demanded the money, he pushed the so-called bomb towards the cashiers. The store clerks handed some loose money to Torres from the register and he left the scene.
Torres was taken into custody and transported to the Brevard County Jail. Bond set at $50,500.00.
