PALM BAY, Florida – A 26-year-old woman is behind bars after she stole a cache of expensive jewelry from a Palm Bay home, according to police.

Palm Bay police said Amanda Martin, of Melbourne, was hired to help the elderly victim to do repairs around the home. Martin accompanied her stepfather, who runs the repair business.

While at the home in Palm Bay, Martin helped the victim with moving her personal belongings which included her jewelry boxes, according to the report.

Martin left the house and later pawned six earrings, five rings, three bracelets and a necklace, according to the arrest affidavit.

One of the stolen items was a five-carat diamond bracelet, which is worth around $5,000. Martin took the bracelet to Beachside Pawn in Melbourne. Police found the bracelet and determined it was stolen from the Palm Bay victim.

“At least we could catch it before it got on to the streets, where there’s no way to track it,” Chad Laughman of Beachside Pawn said in a statement.

In three different pawn transactions, Martin received $1,583, $828, and $102, totaling over $2,500 which is far less than what the jewelry is worth.

Beachside Pawn keeps a record of all items being pawned, which also goes on file with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Martin confessed, stating that she pawned the items but did not know they were stolen.

Unfortunately, under the law, the elderly victim had to buy back her jewelry from the pawn shops, and then seek restitution from Martin, if she’s convicted.

Martin’s bond was set at $29,000.
