PALM BAY, Florida – A woman is accused of wearing several disguises at the Space Coast Credit Union while withdrawing cash from fake deposits, according to the Palm Bay Police Department.
Last Thursday, Kristin Kelly Schneider, 29, was charged with Defrauding a Financial Institution, Criminal Use of Personal Identification, Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card, Utter Forged Checks, and Grand Theft.
Police in Palm Bay and West Melbourne say Schneider created a sophisticated money laundering scheme by using disguises, the report said.
The alleged scheme went on until loss-prevention experts at Space Coast Credit Union detected the fraud.
Schneider had access to several stolen debit cards and would write fake checks, anywhere from $500 to $3,000, and deposit them into the victim’s bank account. Then, she would withdraw cash immediately from the ATM.
Some victims said they lost or misplaced their ATM debit card, but never called to reported it lost or stolen. Other victims had no idea how Schneider accessed their accounts.
The scheme began to fall apart when Schneider submitted empty deposit envelopes at the ATM, then took the cash against those deposits.
She also used her account and debit card to commit fraud, then later called the bank to report her debit card lost or stolen. The credit union’s video surveillance showed Schneider using various disguises.
Police said she did other scams. Schneider went into numerous Walmarts and used the stolen debit card to get cash back during a small purchase.
Schneider also met people online, made fake deposits into their accounts, and gave them a third of the cash.
Authorities did not say how Schneider obtained the stolen cards.
Since her arrest, Schneider pleaded not guilty and asked the judge for reduced bail because she’s a single mom.
As of Sunday, she is still being held at the Brevard County Jail on $55,000 bond.
