PALM BAY, Florida – An 18-year-old student was arrested after bringing a 45 caliber handgun to Bayside High School, according to the Palm Bay Police Department.
Billy Ray Baker concealed the weapon in his backpack and carried the handgun between classes.
“Neither the firearm nor the magazine was loaded with any ammunition,” police told Palm Bay Daily.
A witness said Baker was taking a test while students in the class were being loud. Baker then allegedly opened his backpack and displayed the firearm to a student and said, “They think I’m playing around.”
Baker put the gun back into his backpack. The witness then told a classmate about what he observed.
Once Baker got up from his seat, another student removed the firearm from the backpack and turned it over to school administration, according to the arrest affidavit.
Baker told police that he forgot the gun was in his backpack. He said the firearm was there for self-defense because he was in a physical altercation on Saturday with another student from the high school. He believed there would be other students wanting to do harm to him, the arrest affidavit said.
“He had no intentions of harming anyone, he just wanted to scare someone if they approached him,” police said.
However, law enforcement took the matter seriously and arrested Baker on charges of Felony Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Interfering with School Admin Functions, and Felony Possession of a Firearm on School Property.
Baker was transported to the Brevard County Jail and held on a $4,500 bond.
