PALM BAY, Florida – A 94-year-old man who kept a handgun on his walker fired his weapon at his son after accusing him of hiding his medicine, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
On Monday, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Everald Holgate of Palm Bay entered his son’s bedroom and accused him of moving his medication.
During the encounter, Holgate was holding a small dark revolver. The son began to pack his belongings to leave when Holgate “lifted the firearm and pointed it at him,” the report said.
A few moments later, Holgate proceeded to fire the weapon, missing his son and striking the wall behind him, according to the affidavit.
“I observed a hole in the wall which was consistent with being struck by a projectile,” the deputy said.
Deputies recovered a .22 Caliber Smith & Wesson firearm that was on Holgate’s walker. Upon further inspection, deputies determined that one of the rounds in the gun had been fired.
Holgate admitted to all allegations, stating he was only trying to intimidate his son with the handgun.
“Even though [Holgate] is 94 years of age, he is not diagnosed with any type of mental deficiency and appeared to be [cognizant] of his actions,” the deputy said.
Holgate was arrested for aggravated assault with a firearm and transported to the Brevard County Jail. As of Tuesday morning, he remains in jail without bond.
