PALM BAY – On December 29, 2018, the Melbourne Police Department responded to a call about a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road. The driver struck the Melbourne Beach Pier and then fled the scene. Deputies located the vehicle at 501 Sunset Blvd after the driver hit a tree.

“Upon my arrival, I observed a Hispanic male, later identified as Edwin Freytes by his Florida driver’s license, in the driver’s seat with the vehicle running and keys in the ignition,” a deputy stated in the affidavit.

The deputy attempted to get Freytes to shut off the vehicle, but he did not respond. The defendant pressed the gas pedal to try to leave, but the car was in neutral. The law enforcement officer was able to open the door, put the car in park, and shut the vehicle off.

“I observed multiple bottles of alcohol on the passenger side floorboard and an empty beer can in the center console. A bottle of Hennessey cognac also in the center console, half empty,” the Deputy stated.

Brevard County Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and evaluated Freytes, which showed no signs of a medical issue per BCFR. The 57-year-old then complained of chest pain and requested to go to the hospital. He was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center.

Edwin Freytes, of Palm Bay, was arrested and charged with DUI Damage to Prop/Person of Another, DUI Alcohol or Drugs, and Leave Scene Crash w/Prop Damage.

Freytes has been arrested 2 times within the last ten days. On December 19, 2018, he was arrested and charged with Battery Domestic Violence.
