PALM BAY, Florida – The Palm Bay Police Department received a call from the 1000 block of Cromey Road about an altercation between a landlord and a tenant.

Police said 68-year-old Bernd Winfree, of Palm Bay, was arrested on charges of Burglary with Assault, and Battery Domestic Violence when he entered a home uninvited where his tenants are currently living.

Winfree went to the home to retrieve payment for rent when it wasn’t placed in his mailbox the day prior as agreed.

After trying to contact the tenants, Winfree drove to the residence and entered the garage through an open exterior door. He then walked into the residence to retrieve payment, according to the report.

The tenants asked him multiple times to leave the house, but he refused.

“A verbal altercation ensued in the kitchen of the residence between the defendant, the victim, and the victim’s wife. The defendant attempted to provoke the victim’s wife by standing directly in front of her and yelling in her face,” the officer said.

The victim said he and the landlord both “bumped chests” during the confrontation. When the tenants said they were calling the police, the landlord exited the home and sat in his vehicle.

“The defendant arrived and entered an occupied dwelling without being invited and refused to leave upon repeated requests,” Palm Bay Police said.

Winfree was arrested and transported to the Brevard County Jail. Bond set at $5,000.00.
