MELBOURNE, Florida – The Walgreens store at 1350 N. Wickham Road called the Melbourne Police Department about a suspicious person who locked themselves in the public restroom.

Officers arrived at the Melbourne Walgreens store and was told by a clerk that a man made a few purchased before going into the men’s bathroom for approximately 30 minutes.

The clerk handed officers the keys to the restroom after knocking several times to check the welfare of the individual.

“I entered the restroom and observed a white male (later identified as 33-year-old Steven Smith) standing in front of the sink that was overflowing with water,” the officer said.

When asked if he had drugs, Smith advised he had some heroin in his pocket. The officer contacted EMS and noticed that Smith had a small injury to his left forearm.

The substance found inside Smith’s pocket tested positive for heroin. After EMS completed their medical evaluation, officers found a syringe and a metal bent spoon on Smith.

Smith was arrested and transported to the Brevard County Jail where he was charged with Felony Heroin Possession, and Drug Paraphernalia.
