PALM BAY, Florida – On Tuesday at approximately 9:40 p.m., a woman called law enforcement to report someone hit her garbage cans, palm tree, mailbox, and continued to leave the scene, according to the Palm Bay Police Department.
Officers arrived at the 300 block of Olsmar Street where the victim said she was sitting in her bedroom when she heard a “loud bang.” After looking outside her window, she observed a black Toyota Camry stuck on top of her palm tree while the driver was actively trying to free his vehicle.
The victim said the man then freed the vehicle and ran over her mailbox. She yelled “stop!” but the driver continued down the road dragging her mailbox, according to the victim.
The woman then jumped into her vehicle and followed the Toyota Camry to a driveway at the 400 block of Fitzsimmons Street.
When the driver saw her, he yelled, “I FELL ASLEEP, I FELL ASLEEP” repeatedly as he entered the home. She then called the police, the report said.
Officers observed “garbage cans in the middle of the roadway, dirt strewn across her driveway, and a smashed palm tree” upon arrival to the victim’s home. The mailbox was located about 100 feet from the woman’s residence, according to the report.
Police spoke with the man, identified as Robert George Shepherd, Jr., who explained he suffers from a cardiac condition and it made him feel lethargic just before the accident occurred.
“Robert advised after the accident, he left and went to his house. While interacting with Robert, I observed no signs indicating that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” the officer said in the report.
Based on the circumstances, Shepherd was placed under arrest and received a citation for willfully leaving the scene of an accident with property damage. He was released from the scene on his own recognizance and given a court date.
