PALM BAY, Florida – A homeowner and their child called law enforcement after they found a man trying to break into their home.

Palm Bay Police responded to a burglary in progress in the 1600 block of Arcot Circle.

Michael James O’Leary, 32, was seen by the victim trying to break in right as the homeowner arrived. The child, who was home alone, ran out of the house and told his father that a man was in the backyard.

The homeowner walked around the back of his residence and saw O’Leary as he took off running toward Babcock Street.

“After a short chase, he was able to subdue the suspect and walk him back to the residence to wait for officers to arrive,” police said.

The child told officers that someone knocked at the front door, but the child didn’t answer it.

A short time later, the child heard noises again and saw someone messing with the windows. That’s when the child saw the same subject who knocked on the front door, identified as O’Leary.

The child said O’Leary was going from window to window trying to find one that was unlocked.

“The subject walked all the way around the side of the house to the backyard where he attempted to open the back door,” the officer said.

The child hid in a room fearing O’Leary was going to find an open window.

When the child heard their father pull into the driveway, they ran out of the house as fast as they could to tell him what was happening.

Officers then made contact with O’Leary, who said he was only at the residence to find landscape work in Palm Bay. He said he used to mow the lawn at the property, but could not provide either a name of the current homeowner or the name of who had hired him prior.

O’Leary said after knocking on the front door and getting no answer, he entered into the backyard to look at the trees.

While in the backyard, he said someone came around the side of the house and began chasing him.

O’Leary was arrested on a charge of Burglary, and 2 counts of a controlled substance without a prescription that officers found on him during a pat down.

Bond was set at $19,000.00.
