MELBOURNE, Florida – A 52-year-old man was arrested in Merrit Island after throwing traffic cones at vehicles at an active construction zone, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Timothy Wayne Protus was seen harassing the work crew and shouting profanities at them as he hurled the cones at oncoming traffic.

The work crew in Melbourne told Protus to stop throwing the cones because they were placed their for their safety, but he ignored them. As workers set the cones back upright, Protus tossed them all over the road.

“Mr. Protus apparently also began to shout and curse at the work crew when he was told to stop,” the deputy said.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and made contact with Protus at the Sunoco gas station near the Merritt Island Causeway.

As deputies spoke with Protus, his eyes were red and glassy, and his speech was slurred. Law enforcement also detected the impurities of alcohol emanating from his person, the report said.

“Mr. Protus appeared to have difficulty understanding my questions, and when he did answer me, did so in an incoherent manner,” the deputy stated in the report.

Protus was arrested on a charge of Disorder Intoxication and transported to the Brevard County Jail.
