MELBOURNE, Florida – A 31-year-old man was arrested after he threatened his girlfriend with a machete if she didn’t have sex with him.

Melbourne police received a call from the victim at the 4000 block of White Road at 3:00 a.m. Thursday.

The victim told officers that her boyfriend, Nathan Hammond, choked, hit, and then threatened her with a large machete before telling her “tonight’s the night you die.”

Officers were told that Hammond and his girlfriend were preparing for bed when he wanted her to have sex with him. She told him “no.” at which point he “smacked her on the buttocks area three times” before leaving the room, according to the report.

The victim asked Hammond to stop and made another attempt to go to bed. However, Hammond entered the room again and began choking the victim.

“[The victim] stated that she lost consciousness due to not being able to breathe,” the officer said. The victim also found herself half off the bed when she regained consciousness.

The victim then told officers that Hammond returned to the room again with a machete and told her “tonight’s the night you die,” the report said.

Hammond pushed the machete against her neck slightly, pushing it into her neck at the same time. He then fled the scene in his vehicle, and she called law enforcement.

Officers observed injuries to the victim’s neck and throat area, as well as an injury to her eye.

Melbourne police found the vehicle driving on Cibola Drive going through a stop sign. A traffic stop was initiated, and Hammond fled the area on foot towards Aurora Road.

An officer used his Electronic Control Device to subdue Hammond.

“It should be noted that Hammond has two prior convictions for Driving While License Suspended and is being issued a citation for the stop sign violation as well as the Driving While License Suspended with Knowledge,” the officer said in the report.

Hammond told police that the victim pulled the machete on him during the incident. Officers could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath.

Police concluded that Hammond was driving under the influence after he permed field sobriety exercises.

Hammond was arrested and charged with Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Domestic Battery by Strangulation, Resisting an Officer without Violence, and Driving Under the Influence.

Hammond also has two prior convictions for Driving Under the Influence. He was transported to the Brevard County Jail for booking.
