MELBOURNE, Florida – Police in Fort Pierce who were searching for a shooter, found and arrested James Brown, 26, who had a stolen police gun in his possession, according to his arrest affidavit.

Brown, of the 1200 block of Avenue H, has been charged with shooting or throwing a deadly missile into a building or vehicle and destroying, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, and tampering or fabricating evidence.

On Monday, at about 6:30 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting near 13th Street and Avenue H, according to the report. Apparently, a car was shot twice on North 13th Street.

Authorities found Brown in his car sleeping at the 1200 block of Avenue H, according to the report; police removed a gun from Brown’s car, that was near him once he woke up.

Once the serial number of the gun was searched, they found that it was a gun that was reported stolen in late April, from the Melbourne Police Department, according to the report.

Brown’s bail is set at $118,750; he is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail.
